“Rangnick Names Austria Euro Squad: 2 Werder Stars In!”

On Tuesday evening, Ralf Rangnick (65) announced the provisional Austria squad for the upcoming European Championship. Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid (25) and new signing Marco Grüll (25) from Rapid Wien were among those selected by the German coach. However, Werder’s captain Marco Friedl (26) narrowly missed out on a spot, despite his recent strong performances in the Bundesliga matches.

The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) named 29 players in the squad, with three set to be cut after the preparation period. The team, missing their injured captain David Alaba (31) from Real Madrid, will play two more friendly matches – against Serbia on June 4 and Switzerland on June 8 – before the tournament kicks off. Grüll makes a comeback to the national team after being excluded by Rangnick in March due to a homophobia scandal during the Vienna derby.

As the excitement builds up for the upcoming European Championship, with the final squad yet to be finalized, fans can look forward to seeing how Schmid and Grüll perform on the international stage. Friedl, though unfortunate to miss out this time around, will surely be cheering on his teammates from home. Stay tuned as the Austrian national team gears up for a crucial showdown in the upcoming friendlies before heading into the Euros.
