The club’s sporting director Christian Heidel reflected on the two miraculous escapes, noting that the absence of fans last season due to the pandemic made it a different challenge. Heidel explained that the emotional support from spectators this season made the journey more enjoyable, with Mainz finding strength in adversity. Despite the difficulties, Heidel acknowledged that the first survival was perhaps tougher, as they had fewer points and more uncertainties to address.
Heidel attributed the team’s initial struggles this season to a string of injuries, but he remained confident in the squad’s quality. With the return of key players, Mainz’s performance improved, allowing them to secure their Bundesliga status for another season.
