Roma Eyes Djaló for Defensive Reinforcement Amid Transfer Decisions

0

As the summer transfer window approaches its conclusion, Roma is exploring crucial options to strengthen their defense. The focus is on two key players: Lorenz Assignon and Tiago Djaló. While both could add depth to the squad, Djaló stands out due to his versatility, being able to play both as a central defender and a right-back.

The management at Roma may look to address their defensive issues primarily by pursuing Djaló, especially considering the possible departure of Chris Smalling before the window closes. If Smalling leaves, it would significantly impact the team’s defensive strategy, necessitating the addition of at least two quality players to support Daniele De Rossi’s plans by September 1.

Djaló is gaining traction as a primary target for Roma. The Portuguese defender has drawn interest due to his impressive skill set, tactical flexibility, and the recent discussions between Trigoria and Juventus. A preliminary agreement seems to be in place for Djaló’s loan to Roma, which could either be a straight loan or with a buy option of around €5 to €6 million. Juventus is keen to ensure that Djaló gets ample playing time to develop, especially after he featured just once during his six-month stint with the club.

Roma’s objective aligns perfectly, as acquiring Djaló would provide them with a player they value at no immediate cost. Last season, Paulo Fonseca regarded him as a key player for Lille until a serious injury sidelined him for an extended period. Djaló is physically strong, boasting impressive speed that allows him to excel as a full-back as well, making him a valuable addition for De Rossi, who wants to build a new identity for Roma.

The search for defensive reinforcement intensified after the realization that French defender Loïc Badé was unattainable; Sevilla recently rejected a €20 million bid from Stuttgart for him. If Roma manages to offload some players—such as Dybala, Abraham, Bove, Smalling, or Zalewski—it could provide the club with further opportunities to enhance their squad.

Another name on Roma’s radar is right-back Lorenz Assignon from Rennes, who is highly regarded by Florent Ghisolfi, Roma’s new technical area head. Assignon’s asking price stands at €11 million, a number Rennes is unwilling to negotiate. The French club has, however, indicated a willingness to consider a loan with an obligation to buy, with negotiations currently at a standstill. While Roma prefers a deal structured as €1 million upfront with €10 million later, Rennes is looking for a more immediate return.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen if Djaló can resolve Roma’s immediate defensive challenges and potentially fill the right-back spot, with Assignon still looming as an option should further sales go through. With only days left in the transfer window, Roma’s decision-making will be crucial in shaping the team for the season ahead.
