Juventus Struggles in Preseason: No Wins or Goals Ahead of New Season

0

Juventus faces a frustrating pre-season as Thiago Motta’s side ends their European friendlies without a win and fails to score from open play. In Gothenburg, the team suffered another defeat, this time losing 2-0 to Atletico Madrid, following a similar result in Nuremberg. Joao Felix’s goal early in the second half and a late penalty from Correa sealed another disappointing result for the Bianconeri.

Atletico Madrid’s coach, Diego Simeone, successfully utilized his substitutions, contrasting with Motta, who is still looking to strengthen his squad ahead of their Serie A debut against Como next week. Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli did not travel to Sweden but remained in Italy to oversee transfer negotiations, emphasizing the urgent need for new wingers, like Nico Gonzalez, to better support Dusan Vlahovic in attack.

The match began with Atletico looking more dangerous, as Juventus goalkeeper Di Gregorio made a stunning save from Llorente early on, while a close shot from Griezmann struck the post. However, Juventus started to control possession, boosted by the performance of Khephren Thuram, who showcased an intense and aggressive style that had not been seen in previous matches.

Despite their improved ball movement and some promising combinations, such as those between Vlahovic and Yildiz, Juventus struggled to convert opportunities into goals. Vlahovic himself had two clear chances but failed to find the target on both occasions.

As the second half began, Simeone made tactical changes that quickly paid off. Joao Felix, fresh off the bench, scored within three minutes by taking advantage of a clever assist from Correa, catching Di Gregorio off guard. Juventus, trailing once again, found it hard to respond, and despite some attempts, the tempo of their play fell off.

In the later stages, Atletico Madrid took full control of the match, and Fagioli’s critical mistake in midfield led to a penalty situation. Cabal fouled Giuliano Simeone in the box, and Correa calmly converted from the penalty spot, securing a 2-0 victory for Atletico and leaving Juventus searching for answers as they look ahead to the new season.
