Top medical professionals from around the world are gathering in Madrid from May 25th to 27th for the 31st edition of the Sports Traumatology and Rehabilitation Congress. Hosted at Atletico Madrid’s Civitas Metropolitano stadium, the event is organized by the renowned Italian excellence Isokinetic, a medical group founded in Bologna in 1987. With over 3,000 attendees from 80 countries, the congress focuses on “Football Medicine: Bridging Science and Practice,” featuring 250 speakers presenting 500 scientific contributions. Experts like Manuel Leyes, known for operating on Real Madrid’s top players, will discuss the intersection of neuroscience and biomechanics in sports injuries.

The congress will highlight the essential role of cognitive function in preventing injuries, especially in football. Francesco Della Villa, Director of Isokinetic Research Center, explains how cognitive disturbances can lead to players’ inability to adapt swiftly to unexpected situations on the field, such as sudden changes in direction or feints. This lack of adaptation often results in injuries, like anterior cruciate ligament tears, emphasizing the need to integrate neuroscience and biomechanics in injury prevention and rehabilitation. By providing players and coaches with tools to mitigate risks, the field aims to reduce traumatic incidents in the sport.

Experts, including Fifa Medical Director Andrew Massey, will showcase images illustrating how players’ inadequate reactions to unforeseen movements by opponents can lead to injuries like knee ligament tears. The congress seeks to advance injury prevention by enhancing the dialogue between neuroscience and biomechanics, equipping footballers and trainers with strategies to minimize injury risks proactively. As the global football community continues to explore innovative approaches, the integration of cutting-edge medical knowledge remains crucial in safeguarding players’ well-being on the field.
