“Inter Milan’s Suning Era Ends: American Ownership Takes Over”

0

After nearly eight years and seven trophies, Inter Milan’s era under the ownership of Suning has come to an end. The club’s financing agreement with Oaktree, worth 275 million euros, expired, leaving Steven Zhang with limited time to try to maintain the Italian champions. With the pledge of shares being enforced, a chapter that began on June 6, 2016, has now closed on May 21, 2024. An official statement is expected tomorrow.

For the first time in Inter’s history, the club will be under American ownership as Oaktree assumes control while potential buyers may emerge to negotiate the purchase. Outgoing president Zhang was unable to find a resolution in the standoff with the Californian fund and will step down, potentially leading to legal disputes given the strong words exchanged. During the Chinese family’s tenure, Inter secured two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, and three Italian Super Cups, with near-misses in the Europa League in 2020 and the Champions League in 2023. But that chapter has now ended.
