Genoa is preparing for the potential departure of Icelandic winger Gudmundsson, with Fiorentina currently leading the race to secure his services, surpassing interest from Inter. In response, the club has initiated discussions with Wolverhampton Wanderers to bring in Portuguese striker Fabio Silva. The deal being proposed is a loan with an option to buy, which would allow Genoa to profit from Gudmundsson’s sale while evaluating their options with Silva over the coming season.
This move is reminiscent of the procedure that brought Vitinha to Genoa, also on a loan with a purchase option that they later activated following talks with Marseille. Over the past few seasons, Silva has faced considerable challenges, mainly due to the hefty expectations placed on him when he transferred from Porto to Wolverhampton for a staggering €40 million at just eighteen years old. Silva struggled to make an immediate impact in the Premier League, leading Wolves to loan him out multiple times.
His loan spells included a promising stint at Anderlecht, where he scored 7 goals in 20 appearances, followed by a less fruitful period at PSV Eindhoven, netting only 4 goals in 14 matches. Silva also had a brief return to Wolves before another loan move to the Rangers in January. This nomadic career has certainly affected his development, though he was once regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Portuguese football.
Now, Silva’s future may indeed lie with Genoa, offering him the opportunity for more stability and possibly a definitive end to his search for a permanent home away from the multitude of loans across Europe. If the move goes through, the Rossoblù could field a wholly Portuguese attacking line featuring both him and Vitinha.
