“Sevilla FC and Real Betis Survive as Cádiz Descends”

Cádiz has officially been relegated from the top flight of Spanish football, joining Almería and Granada in the Segunda División next season. This marks the first time in the league’s history that three teams from the same region have been relegated. With the conclusion of the current season, there are no Andalusian teams left in LaLiga for the first time ever. Real Betis and Sevilla FC are the only teams from the region that will remain in the top division for the 2023/2024 season. In the final matchday, there is nothing at stake anymore, with no title race, European spots, or relegation battles left to be decided. The season has come to a close with a whimper as the result of the matches are already known.

Andalusia, with five representatives (Betis, Sevilla, Cádiz, Granada, and Almería), has traditionally been well-represented in LaLiga but has seen a downturn in the current season. The elimination of Betis from European competitions, coupled with the struggles of Almería, Granada, and Cádiz, led to all four teams hovering around the lower end of the table. Despite the prior belief that 40 points are needed to avoid relegation, teams like Mallorca have secured safety with fewer points, marking a trend of lower point totals securing survival. This season, the woes of Almería and Granada made the relegation battle clear early on, with Cádiz sealing their fate with a draw against Las Palmas.

The upcoming season in the Segunda División will see a resurgence of Andalusian representation, with at least three teams (Cádiz, Granada, and Almería) set to compete in the league. The absence of Andalusian presence in the league last year will be rectified, as the second tier welcomes back teams from the region. Additionally, potential promotions of Málaga and Córdoba could further increase the number of Andalusian clubs in the Segunda División, highlighting the rich footballing culture of the region.
