The mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá, addressed the recent protests by Valencia CF fans against club owner Peter Lim. Fans are urging the mayor and other authorities to intervene and push Lim out of the club’s ownership. However, Catalá clarified that while public institutions can demand commitment and adherence to the law, they cannot remove an owner from their property. The focus should be on ensuring the city’s interests are met regarding the club’s commitments, such as the construction of the New Mestalla stadium and the Benicalap facilities.
Despite being a dedicated Valencia CF supporter, Mayor Catalá emphasized the need to prioritize the city’s needs over populist decisions regarding the club. She highlighted the importance of reaching a consensus with the opposition to benefit the city as a whole. Additionally, she affirmed that the Valencia CF’s obligations to the city, including the completion of projects like the New Mestalla stadium and Benicalap facilities, should be met without concessions to become a host city for the 2030 World Cup.
Mayor Catalá also referred to the impending demolition of a stand at the current Mestalla stadium due to a court ruling. While expressing her fondness for the old stadium, she stressed the importance of respecting private property rights and making decisions responsibly. Ultimately, her focus remains on ensuring the club fulfills its commitments to the city, rather than pursuing ambitions like hosting the World Cup.
