The excitement for AS Roma fans continues as the club looks to bolster its squad. After the recent signings of Soulé and Dovbyk, Director of Sport Tiago Ghisolfi is working tirelessly to strengthen head coach Daniele De Rossi’s team. Aside from targeting a right-back and a left winger, the focus is now shifting to the defensive line, particularly for a speedy central defender.
Chris Smalling and Kumbulla have not met the coach’s speed requirement and are currently on the transfer list. A familiar name is resurfacing: Arthur Theate, a Belgian defender currently at Rennes. Theate had previously been linked with Roma last season when José Mourinho expressed interest, especially with input from Romelu Lukaku. However, Rennes delayed any transfer discussions at that time.
Recent reports from Belgium suggest that negotiations have begun, although no official offer has been made by Roma yet. Rennes values Theate at around €20 million, including fixed fees and bonuses. Meanwhile, discussions between Roma’s management and Theate are reportedly well underway, with the player open to signing a five-year deal worth €2 million annually.
At just 24 years old, Theate presents an attractive option for Roma, combining affordability with a desire to return to Italian football. His skills align perfectly with the club’s current market strategy under the Friedkin ownership. Primarily, Theate has played as a left-center back in a four-man defense but can also operate as a left-back or a left-sided center-back in three-man setups, which are becoming increasingly popular among teams, including the Belgian national squad.
Standing at 185 cm and weighing 78 kg, Theate showcases strength, aggression, and short-burst speed. His left foot is particularly adept at initiating play, which is exactly what De Rossi seeks in that position. Throughout his two seasons in France, Theate has made 82 appearances and scored eight goals.
“I still really like Italian football. Will I return? We’ll see…” he remarked a few months ago. Now, it appears that the moment for his return may finally be at hand.
