Roma Signs Right-Back Lorenz Assignon on Loan with Option to Buy

As Daniele De Rossi returns from Cagliari, he could be losing Paulo Dybala but gaining a right-back. Late last night, positive news emerged regarding AS Roma’s proposal to Rennes for Lorenz Assignon. The French club has accepted a loan deal that includes a purchase option, which will become mandatory triggered by Assignon’s first appearance. The total expenditure is expected to reach €10 million, comprising €1.5 million for the loan and €8.5 million for the acquisition.

Initially, Roma had suggested a modified payment structure of €1 million upfront and €9 million later, but Rennes wanted a larger immediate payment. The decisive factor was Assignon’s eagerness to join Roma, where he will reunite with former teammate Enzo Le Fée and nearly double his salary from €750,000 per year in France.

Last year, the 24-year-old right-back spent six months on loan at Burnley before returning to Ligue 1. The final contractual and payment details need to be ironed out, after which Assignon will officially become Roma’s new right-back. This acquisition follows closely behind that of Saud Abdulhamid from Al-Hilal, for whom an agreement for €2.5 million has already been reached.

With these signings, De Rossi will have two dynamic right-backs at his disposal, particularly crucial after the departure of Rick Karsdorp from the squad and the potential sale of Zeki Celik, who is expected to feature against Cagliari possibly for the last time.
