“I feel like a surfer, and Bologna is my beautiful wave.” These words from Riccardo Orsolini capture the excitement and passion that the Bologna winger has for his club. However, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for Orsolini, who recently faced disappointment after not being called up by coach Luciano Spalletti for Euro 2024.
Reflecting on his absence from the European Championship, Orsolini expressed his pain regarding the decision, saying, “It hurt me deeply not to be selected for the Euros. I’d rather not get into it too much because it caused me a lot of distress. I promised myself not to suffer like that again for a sporting matter. The greatest victory for me during that time was receiving messages of support and hugs from all around. It was truly beautiful.”
Orsolini, who netted 11 goals last season, also pondered why he wasn’t picked. “I have many questions, although sometimes asking doesn’t really help. The decision was made, influenced by various factors, but it hit me hard. I spent days staring at the ceiling. I needed to disconnect, so I went far away and turned off my phone. Even my family was worried that I might respond negatively if they called me during that tough period. Do I still think about the national team? Not anymore. Right now, my focus is solely on Bologna.”
As he steps into a leadership role, Orsolini looks ahead. “I believe it’s time, after spending so many years here, to be a reference point for the younger players. De Silvestri, Skorupski, and Freuler will assist me in this. We aim to maintain the qualities that brought us success last season. Personally, I think I can offer a lot to these young guys and the club. I would love to be somewhat of a father figure to the younger players. I want to achieve many satisfactions with this shirt, enjoying every moment without just dreaming.”
The transition from manager Thiago Motta to Vincenzo Italiano has brought changes to Bologna’s style of play. “Italiano has introduced different concepts. Compared to the previous style, which was more collective, we are now focusing on key strengths, like one-on-ones on the flanks and creating opportunities in the attacking zone, while still preserving the fluid passing that defined our game last season. Concepts include aggression, pressing, high recovery, and striving to break through.”
Looking ahead, Orsolini shared his excitement about playing in the Champions League, something that seemed unimaginable just months ago. “I get chills just thinking about it. Knowing the groups is incredible, and I can’t wait to step onto the pitch on September 17.” For Orsolini, Bologna is not just a club; it’s a significant chapter in his life and career, one that he is determined to navigate with skill and tenacity.
