Napoli’s Lukaku Deal Complicated by Osimhen’s Potential Move to Chelsea

In a shift of strategy regarding the club’s approach to signing Romelu Lukaku, Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna has realized that to successfully navigate the complex financial landscape of a transfer, he may need to include Victor Osimhen in the discussions with Chelsea. Currently, Lukaku’s asking price from the Blues stands at €43 million, while Napoli’s offer—€25 million plus an additional €5 million in bonuses—falls short of Chelsea’s expectations.

Manna has begun to recognize that Osimhen could play a crucial role in bridging the financial gap between the two clubs. The Nigerian striker’s previous interest in a move to Paris Saint-Germain now seems to have been eclipsed by Chelsea’s strong interest. To support Napoli’s bid, influential figures such as Obi Mikel and Didier Drogba have started to engage with Osimhen, encouraging him to see Chelsea as a viable and positive next step in his career. Mikel expressed hope that Chelsea fans would soon see Osimhen in their colors, noting the importance of making Chelsea his top priority.

Despite these persuasive efforts, there are significant challenges ahead. Osimhen’s current salary of €10 million a year, excluding bonuses, could put him among the highest earners at Chelsea, which is currently focused on reducing wages across the squad. The question remains whether Osimhen, who has often resisted outside suggestions regarding his career choices, would consider a pay cut unless some financial assistance comes from Napoli.

As the clock ticks down to their season opener against Verona, coach Antonio Conte faces the challenge of working with an incomplete squad, further complicated by players who are no longer part of his plans.

In terms of potential reinforcements, Napoli is eyeing Billy Gilmour, the Scottish midfielder from Brighton, as a key addition to strengthen their midfield. Reports suggest a deal worth €15 million (comprising €12 million plus €3 million in bonuses), although the English club has been slow to finalize the transfer. There is also speculation surrounding a move for Scott McTominay from Manchester United, but the €30 million price tag makes this a very difficult target to pursue.

As negotiations continue, Napoli will need to balance their ambitions in the transfer market with the crucial need to solidify their squad leading into the new season.
