Marcus Thuram Shines with Double Against Genoa, Outshining Father Lilian

Marcus Thuram has created a memorable moment that even his father, Lilian, never experienced: scoring a double in Serie A. While Lilian managed just one goal throughout his career — against Croatia in the 1998 World Cup semi-final — Marcus achieved this feat at the Ferraris Stadium against Genoa. His two goals showcased his skill: the first with a deft header, and the second a clever chip after a swift run and assist from Davide Frattesi.

Thuram is currently the in-form player for coach Simone Inzaghi. He demonstrated his abilities in London, where he dazzled Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with a stunning left-footed finish, and he carried that momentum into the new Serie A season. The match against Genoa ultimately ended in a frustrating 2-2 draw for Inter Milan, but Thuram left the field as the man of the match, sending a strong message to those who doubted him during the European Championship.

The pressure of competition has been beneficial for him. Over the summer, Thuram focused on his fitness, closely following the team’s discussions and welcoming the compliments aimed at new signing Mehdi Taremi, who impressed with goals and assists in pre-season. A muscle injury limited Taremi’s early impact, but despite that, Thuram’s position on the team was never in jeopardy. He proved his worth by becoming the standout performer in the Milan derby, having been signed this summer to play alongside Lautaro Martinez.

At Ferraris, he played a complete game, taking five shots on target, creating two chances, and winning five duels. The last time he netted a brace was in 2022, during a match between Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach, marking his seventh career double and his first as a Serie A champion.

Thuram returned from vacation just three days before the season kickoff, quickly regaining his fitness and showing he is ready for action. Inzaghi commended him, stating, “He needs to keep working like this. He has shown maturity.” After scoring his second goal, Thuram shared a heartfelt moment with his teammates, embracing them under the Inter supporters’ section. Once free from their hugs, he opened his arms and smiled at the fans, signaling a message of confidence: “Guys, I’ve got this.” This is the bright side of Thuram’s journey as he starts to shine in Serie A.
