Gilardino’s Genoa Triumphs Over Nesta’s Monza in Serie A Showdown

Alessandro Nesta and Alberto Gilardino, once stars of AC Milan and the Italian national team, are now in the spotlight for a different reason. Both former teammates have transitioned into managerial roles in Serie A, where they face off as rivals. Their recent encounter at the U-Power Stadium showcased their ambitions and desire for growth in their new careers.

This time, it was Gilardino who left with a smile, thanks to a standout performance from his striker, Andrea Pinamonti. The match ended with Pinamonti’s spectacular header just before halftime, securing a crucial three points for Genoa.

Monza, managed by Nesta, featured Pizzignacco in goal and a front line helmed by Mota and Maldini, supporting striker Petagna in a 3-4-2-1 formation. Meanwhile, Gilardino opted for a 3-5-2 setup, welcoming the debut of Pinamonti alongside Vitinha.

The first half of the match was a tactical battle, with both teams feeling each other out. The only real chance came from Messias, whose shot flew just wide. However, the excitement ramped up in injury time. Gollini made a fantastic save from Petagna’s header, denying him after a quick instinctive challenge from Maldini was ruled offside.

Then came the moment of brilliance from Pinamonti in the 52nd minute. A superb cross from the right by Sabelli found him, and his impeccable header brought cheers from the Genoa bench as they took the lead.

After a stern talk during the break, Nesta’s Monza emerged more determined. They sought to regroup, displaying more aggression as Petagna aimed for goal, only to see his shot miss the target. Both managers began making changes to invigorate their teams, with Gilardino substituting key players as Genoa appeared to tire.

Monza pressed for an equalizer, but missed opportunities plagued their efforts. One highlight was a misdirected shot from Malinovskyi that turned into an unexpected assist for Thorsby, who failed to convert from close range.

As the clock ran down, Monza’s desperation grew. Caprari delivered a cross that hit the post, coming agonizingly close to leveling the score. The last chance to equalize fell to Kiriakopoulos, but his effort was saved by Gollini.

In the battle of former teammates, it was Gilardino who prevailed, edging Nesta in a competitive match that highlighted both sides’ potential for growth in Serie A.
