From Aspiring Soccer Star to Actor: Seydou Sarr’s Journey at Venice Film Festival

Seydou Sarr, who once dreamt of becoming a professional football player, has found success in a different field—acting. Fresh from his role in the film ‘Io Capitano’ directed by Matteo Garrone, Sarr returns to the Venice Film Festival (August 28 – September 7) with a new documentary titled ‘Seydou – Il sogno non ha colore’, directed by Simone Aleandri. This documentary is produced by Wonder Project in collaboration with Rai Cinema and Lega Serie A.

The film explores the first nineteen years of Sarr’s life, driven by his ambition to become a footballer. Despite his unexpected success in acting, Sarr continues to nurture his passion for football. The documentary chronicles his journey across Italy as he seeks to meet those who have “made it” in the football world. Along the way, he visits various Serie A clubs and their training facilities, engaging in discussions with prominent figures from both Italian and international football. This includes encounters with stars like Adli, Banda, Dybala, Danilo, Messias, and Okoye, as well as legendary players such as Francesco Totti and Ciro Ferrara.

However, the documentary goes beyond just football stories. Sarr’s journey incorporates reflections on racism and how deeply entrenched it is in our society today. From verbal abuse in public spaces to hurtful comments on social media, Sarr highlights how even football can become a battleground for this discrimination. His discussions provide an opportunity to reflect on personal triumphs and collective struggles against injustice. They raise significant questions about the value of diversity and underline the potential of both football and cinema to bring people together, transcending differences.
