Atalanta Targets Celtic’s Matt O’Riley as Koopmeiners Replacement

Atalanta is focused on finding a successor for Teun Koopmeiners, particularly with potential transfer rumors surrounding the Dutch midfielder gaining momentum. The club has set its sights on Matt O’Riley, the promising Danish talent currently playing for Celtic. As negotiations unfold, Atalanta has yet to meet Celtic’s asking price of over €25 million for O’Riley, although their interest in the player remains strong. Brighton from the Premier League is also reportedly keen on securing O’Riley’s signature.

O’Riley, who developed at Fulham before moving to Celtic in January 2022 for a modest fee, has become a key target for Atalanta. He has an impressive scoring record, netting 27 goals in just over two seasons, which makes him a suitable candidate to replace Koopmeiners, who himself scored 29 times in three years. The 22-year-old midfielder is not only expected to contribute to the team’s creativity but also provide depth in the attacking lineup.

The Norwegian has been a crucial player for Atalanta, serving both as a playmaker and an offensive threat. Finding a player who can fulfill both roles is no easy task. Atalanta’s objective is to add someone who possesses a good goal-scoring ability from midfield while also being capable of making significant contributions in the attack.

As the transfer window progresses, Atalanta is awaiting a decisive move to finalize O’Riley’s transfer, especially as the need for a player of his caliber becomes increasingly urgent. Their plans for acquiring wide players have also faced hurdles, particularly in their pursuit of Spanish player Marc Pubill. After some complications with medical checks, the deal did not materialize, prompting Atalanta to consider alternative options.

One immediate option is Brazilian winger Wesley França from Flamengo. França, who is also 20 years old, possesses contrasting attributes, being a quick dribbler who thrives in open spaces. Additionally, Atalanta is eyeing Neco Williams from Nottingham Forest, but the English club’s demand of approximately €30 million could complicate that deal.

As Atalanta navigates these challenges, they remain committed to strengthening their squad with the right players to ensure they can continue their pursuit of success in both domestic and European competitions.
