Atalanta has officially secured their “new” Scamacca. On Wednesday, the Serie A club reached an agreement with Genoa for the transfer of Mateo Retegui, reportedly for around €22 million plus bonuses. The Italian-Argentinian striker is expected to undergo medical examinations in the coming hours, after which he will finalize his contract with the Bergamasque club.
Atalanta had previously shown interest in Retegui, who arrived in Italy just a year ago, after being called up to the national team by Roberto Mancini during his time at Tigre in Argentina. Following the injury to Gianluca Scamacca, who suffered a serious knee injury in a match against Parma and has already undergone surgery, Atalanta moved quickly to secure the 25-year-old forward. Retegui enjoyed a solid last season, netting 9 goals across both Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
In the next few hours, Retegui is expected to leave Genoa’s training center in Pegli to make his way to Milan. He will have his medical tests at the La Madonnina clinic before traveling to Zingonia to sign his contract with Atalanta. He is anticipated to join Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad in time for the UEFA Super Cup match against Real Madrid on August 14.
