Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip to leave Liverpool

Liverpool has confirmed that midfielder Thiago Alcantara and defender Joel Matip will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Thiago, who joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020, played 98 matches for the club, while Matip, signed from Schalke in 2016, made 201 appearances and scored 11 goals. Both players have struggled with injuries this season, with Matip out since December due to an ACL injury and Thiago dealing with a muscle problem.

Matip expressed his gratitude for his time at Liverpool, highlighting the success the team achieved during his tenure, including winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Matip, emphasizing the player’s impact on and off the field. Both Matip and Thiago will leave after Liverpool’s final game of the season against Wolves on Sunday, with the team having won the FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022.

Thiago, reflecting on his time at Liverpool, described it as a “life-changing experience” and expressed his appreciation for the fans. Klopp commended Thiago’s talent and acknowledged the frustrations caused by injuries. Despite their departure, both players will be remembered for their contributions to Liverpool’s recent successes, including coming close to a quadruple in the 2022 season.
